If you didn’t know, a Batik is a traditional way of making designs and colouring on cloth. To explain simply, Batik is a wax resist dyeing of fabric process and is an ancient art form. Liquid wax is applied to the cloth using a drawing implement or a stamp. This wax hardens and creates the design. The applied wax resists dyes and therefore allows the artisan to colour selectively by soaking the cloth in one colour, removing the wax with boiling water, and repeating if multiple colours are desired. It is a process that can take a lot of time and is certainly a skilled craft.
