When searching online for the words “Red Dragon” a great many search engine results point to our website. This didn’t surprise us much as we promote products such as this Anne Stokes Red Dragons Figurine and this cute Red Flame Dragon Soft Toy, however whenever I think of Red Dragon I think of either the Welsh flag or the book Red Dragon written by Thomas Harris and film starring Anthony Hopkins. You probably do too.
These search terms got me thinking about the words ‘red dragon’ and all that might be related to them. Let’s begin by looking at the two most common Red Dragon references shall we?
The Welsh Flag
The Flag of Wales consists of a red dragon on a green and white background. In Welsh, Baner Cymru means The Flag of Wales but we much prefer the wording Y Ddraig Goch which translates perfectly as ‘The Red Dragon’. As is common with many heraldic charges, the representation of the dragon is not standardised and many different renderings exist, but we would imagine that they are always red in colour!
This flag was granted official status in 1959, but the red dragon has been associated with Wales for many centuries, however the adoption of the dragon symbol has been lost in time and myth. It has been suggested that the Roman cavalry brought the emblem to Wales on their standards during their occupation of Britain. Red Dragon: The first book in The Hannibal Lecter series
Originally published in 1981, Red Dragon is the first novel in The Hannibal Lecter series written by Thomas Harris. The plot centres around retired FBI profiler Will Graham, who returns to work to apprehend a serial-killer nicknamed “The Tooth Fairy”. In Red Dragon, we are introduced to Dr. Hannibal Lecter, a clever psychiatrist and cannibalistic serial-killer, to whom Graham reluctantly turns for advice. The title refers to the figure from William Blake’s painting The Great Red Dragon and the Woman Clothed with the Sun.
The painting plays a prominent role in the novel Red Dragon, where the antagonist Francis Dolarhyde has an obsession with the painting. He is fixated with the strength and power he thinks the dragon issues, so he kills entire families to “become” the dragon. The killer also has a giant tattoo of the dragon on his back.
In 1986, the novel was adapted as a film, Manhunter, which featured Brian Cox as Lecter. It was directed by Michael Mann, and although the film fared poorly at the box office, it now has a cult following.
The more famous film of the novel Red Dragon was released in 2002. It was essentially a remake of Manhunter, but due to the overwhelming successes of The Silence of the Lambs in 1991 and Hannibal in 2001, the remake starred Anthony Hopkins as Hannibal Lecter.
After doing a search for the words ‘red dragon’ on Google the third most popular result that kept appearing was for Red Dragon darts.
