When I was young I watched quite a lot of cartoons (as I guess most kids do) and one of my favourite TV shows was Dungeons & Dragons. It ran from 1983 to 1985 for 3 seasons so I would have been about 13 years old when it began. I was instantly hooked and it was vital that I watched every episode, every week, otherwise there would be major upsets in our household!

It was a different cartoon from all the others on television at the time. It was a little edgier. A little darker. A little scarier perhaps. The human characters weren’t all nice or friendly. I wanted to be like Hank. Diana and Shelia where girls I would have been happy to hang out with. Bobby was like an annoying little brother that you loved really and Presto made me laugh out loud. Then, of course, there was Eric. I really didn’t like Eric. He complained and moaned and acted like a cowardly and spoiled brat, but as the show went on, you realised that he wasn’t so bad after all. He was possibly the most realistic of all the characters looking back now. It’s true to say that as a teenager I really identified with all the characters.

Within the Realm of Dungeons and Dragons we find some fantastical creatures too. There is Uni the Unicorn, the cryptic Dungeon Master, the evil Venger, and the colossal five-headed female dragon Tiamat.

Tiamat

Each week I crossed my fingers hoping that the group would return home to the theme park and all would be alright, however the show never came to its final conclusion and it is implied that they didn’t make it back. However, even to this day, I am still hoping that the kids make it out of the Realm of Dungeons & Dragons!

Dungeons & Dragons TV Show on DVD

It’s been a great many years since I saw the show but I recently discovered that it is available on DVD so I have added it to my Amazon wish list! You can find it here:

On Amazon UK: Dungeons & Dragons – The Complete Animated Series
On Amazon US: Dungeons & Dragons: The Complete Animated Series

I hope that it’s as good to watch now as it was back then!
